An offshore drilling rig operated by Borr Drilling sank off Gabon after losing stability during preload operations, prompting a search-and-rescue operation and the suspension of production in the affected area.
The Prospector 5 incident occurred late Saturday in the Dussafu Marin permit area near BW Energy’s Mabomont production facility.
Borr Drilling said preliminary information indicated that a punch-through event during preload activities caused the rig to lose stability and sink.
There were 115 people aboard. Reuters reported Sunday that one employee had died and four people remained missing, citing sources familiar with the incident. Gabon’s government had separately reported five people missing and had not at that point officially confirmed the reported death.
That distinction remains important while rescue operations and official identification continue.
The rig had been contracted to support BW Energy’s offshore operations but had not yet begun drilling.
Gabon activated a crisis unit and deployed additional naval resources while ordering a technical investigation. Production in the area was halted following the accident.
Authorities said there was no reported discharge of harmful substances at the time of reporting, while pollution-response resources remained deployed because of the proximity of the incident to Gabon’s coastline and Mayumba National Park.
For investors, immediate priorities are the search operation, the duration of the production interruption, the investigation into the rig failure and any resulting financial or operational exposure for Borr Drilling and BW Energy.
