U.S. and Canada Move Closer to Trade Agreement as Negotiations Accelerate

The United States and Canada are moving closer to a trade agreement, with White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett saying Sunday that negotiations have accelerated and the two countries are nearing a deal.

Hassett said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had been speaking with Canadian counterparts throughout the week as negotiations regained momentum.

No final agreement has been announced, and specific tariff or market-access terms remain unresolved. The development should therefore be treated as progress in negotiations rather than a completed trade accord.

A deal would carry significant consequences because the United States and Canada operate one of the world’s largest bilateral trading relationships, with deeply integrated supply chains spanning automobiles, energy, agriculture and manufacturing.

The negotiations are particularly important for companies whose production crosses the border multiple times before a finished product reaches consumers. Changes in tariffs or market-access rules can therefore affect costs well beyond the directly taxed goods.

Energy is another major component of the relationship. Canada remains an important supplier of crude oil, natural gas and electricity to the United States, while Ottawa has simultaneously been pursuing greater export diversification.

For markets, the key development will be whether the reported negotiating progress produces an announced framework with identifiable tariff, energy and industrial provisions.

Until those terms are released, investors should distinguish improving political momentum from a finalized agreement.
