SpaceX has raised $40 billion in debt financing primarily to fund purchases of graphics processors, providing one of the clearest examples yet of how aggressively major technology companies are borrowing to expand artificial-intelligence infrastructure.
Elon Musk said Sunday that the financing had closed and that the company’s investment-grade status, together with revenue generated by Starlink and launch operations, helped preserve its access to credit markets.
The financing is primarily callable debt tied to GPUs expected to arrive during the first and second quarters of 2027, according to Musk.
The scale is substantial even by the standards of the AI investment boom.
SpaceX expects capital expenditure of roughly $35 billion to $40 billion during the fourth quarter of 2026 as it expands computing capacity alongside its satellite and launch businesses. The company reported third-quarter revenue of $14.58 billion, up 161% from a year earlier, while AI-related revenue reached approximately $7.56 billion.
The financing also sharpens an increasingly important distinction inside the AI infrastructure market.
Musk said companies without significant revenue outside their data-center businesses could face greater difficulty accessing debt markets. He expects consolidation and failures among some specialized AI-cloud providers, commonly called neoclouds.
That matters for investors because AI infrastructure expansion increasingly depends not only on demand for computing power but also on the ability of companies to finance enormous upfront investments in processors, power and data centers.
The new financing represents a material development beyond SpaceX’s previously reported expansion into AI infrastructure: the company has now disclosed a specific $40 billion financing transaction and identified GPU purchases as its principal purpose.
The next questions are the financing terms, the pace at which the new GPUs become operational and whether SpaceX’s AI revenue continues expanding rapidly enough to support the extraordinary capital being deployed.
