Global Food Prices Reach Nearly Four-Year High as Sugar and Grain Costs Surge

Global food prices rose to their highest level in nearly four years in September as weather risks, logistics disruptions and constrained Black Sea trade pushed several major agricultural commodities higher.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s Food Price Index averaged 136.0 points, up from a revised 134.0 in August and its highest level since November 2022.

Sugar recorded one of the largest moves.

The FAO sugar-price index jumped 6.1% from August, its third consecutive monthly increase, as adverse weather threatened production in major growing regions.

Cereal prices increased 5.1%, reflecting weaker U.S. corn-yield prospects and disruptions affecting Black Sea grain exports.

Vegetable-oil prices increased 0.9%, with palm oil supported by strong demand and concerns that El Niño conditions could reduce Southeast Asian production.

Not every food category increased. The FAO meat index declined 1.1%, partly because European Union demand for poultry weakened following new import rules.

The broader direction, however, creates another inflation risk for countries already dealing with expensive energy.

Food-price shocks can be especially consequential for lower-income and food-import-dependent economies because food represents a larger share of household spending.

The FAO separately left its forecast for 2026 global cereal production almost unchanged at 2.979 billion metric tons. That would be 2.1% below last year’s record but still the second-largest crop on record.

The agency cut its 2026/27 world cereal-trade forecast by 0.7%, citing weaker wheat and maize export expectations as Black Sea shipping remains constrained.

That combination illustrates the distinction between production and availability.

A large global harvest does not guarantee low prices if weather risks, transportation disruptions and geopolitical constraints prevent crops from reaching buyers efficiently.

Markets should watch Black Sea shipping, El Niño conditions, U.S. corn yields and sugar production for signs that September’s increase is temporary or the beginning of a more persistent food-inflation cycle.
