Western Sydney International Airport opened to passengers Sunday, bringing a major new piece of Australian transport infrastructure into operation after years of construction and planning.

The A$5.6 billion, or approximately $3.94 billion, airport is located at Badgerys Creek, about 60 kilometers west of central Sydney.

The airport’s most important operational distinction is that it can operate 24 hours a day.

Sydney’s existing Kingsford Smith Airport operates under nighttime restrictions, limiting takeoffs and landings between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Western Sydney’s curfew-free operation gives airlines greater scheduling flexibility while creating additional capacity for passenger and freight services.

The first passenger departure was scheduled as a Jetstar service to the Gold Coast. Air New Zealand is due to begin Auckland service on October 26, while Singapore Airlines plans daily Singapore flights beginning November 23.

The Australian government says the airport can initially serve up to 10 million passengers annually, with infrastructure designed for substantial long-term expansion.

The broader project has already had a significant construction impact.

More than 12,800 jobs were created during development, and more than A$500 million was spent with approximately 360 Western Sydney businesses, according to the Australian government.

The airport also sits at the center of a much larger infrastructure program involving road improvements and a future Sydney Metro connection.

For airlines, the commercial question is whether Western Sydney can attract enough passengers and international routes to establish itself as a second major gateway rather than simply absorbing overflow from the existing airport.

For the regional economy, 24-hour passenger and freight capability could support logistics, tourism, commercial development and employment across western Sydney.

The next milestones will be the ramp-up of international routes, passenger volumes and completion of supporting transport infrastructure.
