China’s Industrial Profit Growth Slows Sharply as AI Boom Masks Weak Domestic Demand

China’s industrial profit growth lost substantial momentum in August, exposing an increasingly uneven economy in which booming technology manufacturing is offsetting persistent weakness in domestic demand.

Profits at major industrial companies rose 4.2% from a year earlier in August, down from 11.2% growth in July, according to National Bureau of Statistics data released Monday.

For January through August, profits increased 15.7% to 5.27 trillion yuan, slowing from the 17.6% expansion recorded during the first seven months.

The headline numbers conceal an unusually large divergence between industries.

Profits among computer, communications and other electronic-equipment manufacturers increased roughly 110% during the first eight months, reflecting demand associated with artificial intelligence and computing infrastructure.

Manufacturing profits overall increased 17.4%, while mining profits rose 35.1%. By contrast, profits in electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply declined 12%.

Consumer-facing industries remain substantially weaker. That matters because China’s economic challenge is increasingly less about its ability to manufacture and export advanced products than its ability to generate stronger domestic demand.

The industrial-profit figures therefore reinforce a two-speed picture: AI, electronics and selected industrial sectors are generating strong earnings while weaker consumption and excess capacity continue limiting pricing power elsewhere.

The figures also matter internationally.

China’s expanding high-technology manufacturing capacity is strengthening its position in global supply chains, but greater reliance on exports risks intensifying trade friction at a time when major economies are scrutinizing Chinese industrial competition.

Markets should watch whether domestic consumption improves enough to broaden corporate profitability beyond technology and industrial exporters.

Without that broadening, China’s economy could remain increasingly dependent on advanced manufacturing and overseas demand even while aggregate industrial profits continue growing.
