Bumble Surges 50% on Report of Talks to Go Private at About $1 Billion Valuation

Bumble shares surged approximately 50% Monday after reports that the dating-app company is in advanced talks to be taken private by Ithaca Holdings in a transaction valuing it at roughly $1 billion.

The stock closed at $3.80 following the report, recording its largest-ever percentage gain in a single session.

The potential valuation highlights how dramatically investor expectations for Bumble have changed since the company entered public markets in 2021 at a valuation of roughly $14 billion.

Bumble had a market capitalization of approximately $389 million at Friday’s close before reports of the potential transaction emerged.

The company has struggled with declining engagement and weaker financial performance as consumers reconsider traditional swipe-based dating applications.

Bumble’s paying-user count fell more than 11% during 2025 to approximately 3.7 million.

Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd returned as chief executive in 2025 and has been attempting to reposition the company, including through artificial-intelligence features and changes intended to improve user engagement.

Taking Bumble private could give the company more flexibility to restructure away from the quarterly performance pressures of public markets.

But new ownership would still face the company’s fundamental challenge: rebuilding user growth and demonstrating that consumers remain willing to pay for online dating services.

The negotiations have not resulted in a publicly announced definitive agreement.

That distinction remains important for investors because the reported $1 billion valuation represents a potential transaction rather than a completed acquisition.

The next developments to watch are whether Bumble and Ithaca Holdings reach a definitive agreement, the final terms offered to shareholders and the strategy a new owner would use to reverse the company’s user and revenue declines. (Reuters)
