Fed Decision Takes Center Stage as Inflation Keeps December Rate Hike Risk Alive

The Federal Reserve enters Wednesday’s policy decision facing a difficult combination of persistent inflation, elevated energy prices and an economy that has remained strong enough to tolerate restrictive borrowing costs.

Markets overwhelmingly expect the Federal Open Market Committee to leave the federal-funds target range unchanged at 3.75% to 4.00% after raising rates by 25 basis points in September. The effective federal-funds rate was 3.88% in the latest Federal Reserve data.

The expected hold does not necessarily represent a shift toward easier monetary policy.

Inflation remains above the Fed’s target, while higher energy costs have complicated policymakers’ effort to restore price stability. The September increase was the Fed’s first rate hike in three years.

The immediate market question is therefore moving beyond Wednesday’s decision toward December. Investors will be watching whether Fed Chair Kevin Warsh indicates that another increase could be necessary if inflation remains persistent.

Treasury yields, the dollar, equities and gold are particularly sensitive to that guidance. The 10-year Treasury yield recently reached 5%, underscoring how restrictive financial conditions have become.

The decision also arrives during a major week for technology earnings, increasing the importance of interest-rate expectations for highly valued growth stocks.

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to release its decision at 2 p.m. Eastern Time, followed by Warsh’s press conference.

With a hold largely anticipated, the most important information may come from the Fed’s language about inflation and the likelihood of another rate increase before the end of 2026.
