Dangote Refinery Extends $1.6 Billion IPO as It Pushes to Broaden African Investor Access

Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has extended the subscription period for its initial public offering as one of Africa’s largest industrial companies attempts to attract a broader base of investors across the continent.

The refinery said Monday that applications will now remain open until October 27.

The offering opened September 14 and had been scheduled to close October 13.

Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission approved the extension.

Dangote is seeking approximately $1.6 billion through the offering, which could become one of the most consequential African equity transactions in years.

The company said strong investor interest and efforts to expand access to investors elsewhere in Africa contributed to the decision to extend the subscription period.

The offering is particularly significant because Dangote Refinery represents one of Africa’s largest private industrial investments.

The Lagos facility was built to process approximately 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day at full capacity, potentially reducing Nigeria’s longstanding dependence on imported refined petroleum products while creating a major new source of fuel exports.

The IPO also has implications beyond the refinery itself.

African capital markets have historically struggled to attract broad retail participation and finance infrastructure-scale projects domestically.

A successful Dangote offering could demonstrate that major African industrial companies can raise substantial capital from domestic and regional investors rather than relying predominantly on foreign debt or overseas markets.

The transaction has already generated significant public interest.

But investors must still assess the refinery’s valuation, operating performance, financing requirements and exposure to volatile crude and refined-product markets.

The October 27 closing date will provide the next indication of how much investor demand the offering can ultimately attract and whether the transaction can deepen participation in African equity markets. (Reuters)
