GlobalFoundries has signed a multiyear $2 billion manufacturing agreement with TSMC to establish a U.S.-based supply of silicon interposers used in advanced artificial-intelligence chip packages.
Production will be added at GlobalFoundries’ manufacturing complex in Malta, New York.
The agreement links two major semiconductor manufacturers at an increasingly important bottleneck in the AI hardware supply chain.
Silicon interposers provide the high-density connections between processors, high-bandwidth memory and other components inside advanced chip packages. They are an important part of TSMC’s CoWoS packaging ecosystem, which has become critical to high-performance AI accelerators.
GlobalFoundries said the agreement will establish a U.S.-based source of silicon interposers supporting these advanced packaging technologies and will include capacity for embedded deep-trench capacitor components.
The companies can expand capacity further as customer demand increases.
The transaction matters because the AI semiconductor race is no longer determined solely by the ability to manufacture leading-edge processors.
Packaging capacity has become increasingly important as AI systems combine multiple processors and memory stacks into tightly integrated modules capable of moving enormous amounts of data.
That has turned interposers, advanced packaging and high-bandwidth memory into strategic pieces of the computing supply chain.
The deal also expands the domestic U.S. semiconductor ecosystem without requiring TSMC itself to manufacture every supporting component.
For GlobalFoundries, the agreement provides a major long-term customer while expanding its exposure to the AI infrastructure cycle.
For TSMC, additional U.S. interposer capacity creates another supply source for an area where demand has grown rapidly alongside AI accelerator production.
The next issues for investors will be the timing of the Malta capacity expansion and how quickly production scales as AI packaging demand continues to grow.
