Fed’s Musalem Says Further Rate Hikes Likely Needed as Inflation Pressure Persists

The Federal Reserve may need to raise interest rates further to contain inflation, according to St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem, reinforcing expectations that September’s rate increase may not mark the end of the current tightening cycle.

Musalem said Monday that persistent demand and recurring supply pressures continue to keep inflation risks elevated. He argued that without additional policy restraint, inflation is more likely to remain substantially above the Fed’s 2% target over the next 18 months than return to target.

The comments follow the Federal Reserve’s September 15-16 policy meeting, when policymakers raised the federal-funds target range by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%.

Musalem pointed to a commodity-price shock extending beyond oil as well as resilient domestic demand. July’s personal consumption expenditures inflation rate stood at 3.7%. He characterized current monetary policy as still accommodative despite the latest increase.

His argument is consequential because it frames the inflation problem as broader than a temporary energy shock. If demand remains strong while businesses continue absorbing higher non-labor input costs, policymakers may have less room to wait for inflation to decline on its own.

Other Fed officials are expressing similar concerns, linking persistent inflation and renewed supply shocks to the case for tighter policy.

For markets, the next question is how quickly that view spreads across the Federal Open Market Committee.

Additional tightening would keep pressure on Treasury yields, borrowing costs and rate-sensitive sectors while potentially supporting the dollar. The critical evidence will come from upcoming inflation, employment and spending data — and whether they confirm that demand remains strong enough to sustain price pressure.
