Indonesia Loses $65 Billion as MSCI Threat Raises Risk of Global Index Exclusion

Indonesia’s stock market extended a historic selloff Monday as investors reacted to the possibility that MSCI could strip the country of its emerging-market classification, threatening access to a major channel of international investment capital.

Indonesia’s benchmark stock index fell more than 5% Monday after plunging nearly 12% Friday, pushing the market to a six-year low. Approximately $65 billion in market capitalization was erased Monday.

The pressure follows MSCI’s decision to begin consulting investors on whether Indonesia should be reclassified from Emerging Market to Standalone Market status.

MSCI said investors continue to raise concerns about opaque ownership structures, suspected coordinated trading behavior and insufficient evidence that regulatory reforms are materially improving market functioning. The index provider said it expects to proceed with reclassification unless clear improvements emerge.

Indonesia’s authorities have attempted to strengthen shareholder disclosure, increase minimum free-float requirements and tighten enforcement. But those steps have not yet persuaded MSCI that the market’s structural problems have been resolved.

A downgrade would be unusually consequential because investment funds tracking MSCI benchmarks could be required to remove Indonesian securities from portfolios tied to emerging-market indexes.

The episode is therefore no longer simply a domestic stock-market correction. It is becoming a test of Indonesia’s access to institutional global capital.

MSCI expects to make a final decision by the end of June 2027.
