India’s Reserve Bank has rejected Tata Sons’ bid to surrender its Core Investment Company and NBFC registration, directing the holding company toward Upper Layer compliance that includes a listing path, Indian outlets reported.
Mint, which said it reviewed the letter dated about Sept 11, quoted RBI language that the voluntary surrender request “cannot be acceded to” and that Tata Sons should take steps for full NBFC-Upper Layer compliance immediately. The letter did not set new timelines, Mint said.
The rejection closes the deregistration route pursued after a March 2024 application. Tata Sons standalone assets were cited near 2 lakh crore rupees as of March 31, 2026, above the Upper Layer bright line.
The Sept 17 board is expected to table the letter. Fortune India sources said renegotiation with RBI comes first, with no immediate legal steps. Rejection is not an IPO launch; float size and date remain unannounced. Tata Sons and RBI did not immediately respond to comment requests.
