Broadcom Offers Anthropic Up to $42 Billion to Finance Massive AI Compute Buildout

Broadcom has agreed to provide Anthropic with access to as much as $42 billion in financing for artificial-intelligence infrastructure, revealing how deeply chip suppliers are becoming intertwined with the financing of the AI buildout.

The arrangement, disclosed in Anthropic’s IPO prospectus, could finance approximately one-third of a $125.2 billion five-year commitment Anthropic has made to lease tensor-processing-unit computing capacity.

The relationship extends well beyond a conventional supplier agreement.

Broadcom supplies technology used in AI computing, participates in equipment leasing and is also positioned as a financing provider. Under the arrangement, Broadcom can designate a financing partner, while debt instruments issued by Anthropic could ultimately convert into Anthropic equity.

Anthropic said it does not expect the notes to be sold before its planned initial public offering.

The scale reflects the extraordinary capital requirements associated with frontier AI.

Anthropic is expected to become Broadcom’s largest chip-design customer in 2027. Broadcom projects AI semiconductor revenue of approximately $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in fiscal 2028.

The financing also creates risks.

Anthropic’s prospectus says Broadcom’s simultaneous roles as a hardware supplier and financing partner create potential conflicts of interest that could affect Anthropic’s access to computing capacity.

The filing also warns that certain payment or performance defaults could cause a substantial portion of Anthropic’s lease obligations to become immediately due while restricting its ability to use the financing facility to satisfy those payments.

The arrangement highlights a broader structural feature of the AI investment boom: technology companies selling computing infrastructure are increasingly helping finance the customers purchasing or leasing that infrastructure.

That can accelerate deployment, but it also increases financial interdependence between AI developers and their hardware suppliers.

For investors, Broadcom’s exposure now extends beyond simply selling AI-related technology. Anthropic’s expansion could make the AI developer an increasingly important source of future Broadcom demand while simultaneously exposing Broadcom to financing risk tied to that expansion.

Markets should watch Anthropic’s IPO, the amount of the facility ultimately used, its computing expenditures and whether similar supplier-financing structures become more common across the AI industry.
