Reliance Industries reported a 40.6% increase in quarterly net profit as stronger refining margins and continued growth at Jio offset weaker performance in retail.
Net profit reached 255.48 billion rupees, approximately $2.69 billion, for the quarter ended September 30, exceeding market expectations.
The energy business was a major contributor.
Reliance processed record crude volumes while benefiting from stronger refining and petrochemical margins. The company navigated disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz by diversifying crude sourcing and redirecting fuel exports toward higher-value markets.
Core earnings from refining increased 68%.
The results demonstrate the value of Reliance’s integrated energy system during a period of disruption across global crude and refined-product markets.
Digital operations provided a second source of growth.
Jio Platforms’ core earnings increased 16.6%, strengthening the digital operation’s position as an increasingly important earnings contributor alongside Reliance’s traditional energy businesses.
Retail provided the main counterweight.
Core earnings at the retail division declined 10.2%, while its margin narrowed to 7.8%. Investment in digital commerce, higher costs and the timing of India’s festive season weighed on profitability.
Reliance added 303 retail outlets during the quarter, bringing its network to nearly 20,000 locations. The company plans further expansion of JioMart, dark stores and delivery capacity during fiscal 2027 before placing greater emphasis on monetization.
The divergence inside Reliance matters because the company increasingly operates as several major economic businesses under one corporate structure: energy, telecommunications, digital services and retail.
The next question is whether retail profitability recovers as investment spending matures and whether unusually strong refining margins remain sustainable as geopolitical disruptions evolve.
