Walmart has committed approximately $6 billion over several years to expand its relationship with AI robotics company Symbotic, extending the retailer’s investment in automated distribution infrastructure.
Under the expanded agreement, Symbotic will introduce additional automation capabilities at 25 Walmart regional distribution centers across the United States while also supporting the retailer’s supply-chain operations globally.
The companies have worked together on warehouse automation since 2017. The latest commitment substantially increases the scale of that relationship as Walmart seeks to improve inventory management for e-commerce, increase storage capacity and accelerate the movement of merchandise through its distribution network.
Automation has become increasingly important to large retailers as they attempt to reduce fulfillment costs while improving delivery speed and product availability.
Walmart’s scale means even incremental improvements in inventory movement can have significant implications for logistics productivity and operating costs.
The investment also illustrates a different side of the artificial-intelligence spending cycle. While technology companies are directing enormous sums toward computing infrastructure, retailers are deploying AI and robotics directly into physical supply chains.
The next measure of the investment will be whether automation across the additional distribution centers produces measurable improvements in throughput, inventory availability and fulfillment economics.
