The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady Wednesday, pausing after September’s increase while leaving the door open to additional tightening as inflation remains above target and economic growth stays strong.

The Federal Open Market Committee voted 10-2 to maintain the federal-funds target range at 3.75% to 4.00%. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, with both preferring another quarter-percentage-point increase.

The Fed upgraded its description of the economy, saying activity is expanding at a strong pace, domestic spending remains resilient, productivity growth is strong and capital investment is robust. Policymakers nevertheless said inflation remains elevated.

Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that the Fed remains focused on returning inflation to its 2% objective. The decision represented a pause rather than a declaration that the tightening cycle has ended, and the two dissents demonstrated that support for another increase already exists within the committee.

Markets are now focused on the December 8-9 meeting and the economic data released before it. Inflation, employment and growth figures will determine whether policymakers extend the pause or resume rate increases.

The October decision therefore leaves monetary policy at a critical point: the economy remains resilient enough to tolerate restrictive rates, but persistent inflation continues to limit the Fed’s ability to declare victory.
