Google Signs 3.59-Gigawatt Constellation Power Deal as AI Data Centers Reshape U.S. Grid

Google has contracted for 3,590 megawatts of electricity from Constellation Energy in one of the largest U.S. power agreements tied to the accelerating expansion of artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

The arrangement includes a 20-year power-purchase agreement covering 890 megawatts of additional nuclear generation from upgrades to existing Constellation reactors.

Constellation plans to invest more than $4.3 billion in its generation fleet as part of the agreement.

Eleven nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey are expected to receive upgrades designed to increase output from existing reactors, with electricity from the first upgraded plant expected in 2028.

Google also signed a separate 15-year agreement for another 2,700 megawatts of power within the PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. electricity market. That portion of the agreement is not tied to a specific generation source.

The transaction illustrates how rapidly the economics of artificial intelligence are spreading beyond semiconductor and software companies.

Data centers require enormous quantities of reliable electricity, and technology companies are increasingly entering long-duration power agreements to secure supply rather than relying entirely on existing grid capacity.

PJM has faced particularly strong demand growth from data centers, contributing to concerns about whether new generation can be added quickly enough.

For investors, the deal reinforces an increasingly important consequence of the AI infrastructure boom: electricity generation and grid capacity are becoming strategic technology inputs alongside chips, servers and data centers.
