Paychex shares came under pressure after the payroll and human-resources services provider reported fiscal first-quarter results in which revenue from its largest business segment fell short of analysts’ expectations.
Paychex reported total first-quarter revenue of approximately $1.63 billion, slightly above the roughly $1.627 billion analyst consensus cited by Reuters. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.34, compared with expectations of approximately $1.32.
The weaker point was the company’s Management Solutions division. Revenue from that segment was approximately $1.21 billion, below expectations of about $1.23 billion. Paychex shares fell sharply in premarket trading following the release.
The company nevertheless reported double-digit diluted earnings-per-share growth and highlighted strong growth from its PEO and Insurance Solutions operations. Paychex also pointed to continued investment in artificial intelligence, including the launch of its WISE Hire agentic recruiting product.
Because Paychex provides payroll, human-resources and benefits services to businesses, its operating performance can also provide investors with insight into conditions affecting employers and smaller businesses.
Investors will now watch whether strength elsewhere in Paychex’s portfolio can offset softer-than-expected growth in its core Management Solutions business as fiscal 2027 progresses.
