Canada and France are expanding cooperation in space and defense as Ottawa strengthens strategic links with Europe amid a shifting global trade and security environment.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday that the two countries have tasked their space agencies and defense ministries with jointly developing space-launch systems and ground reception facilities.
Carney made the announcement alongside French President Emmanuel Macron in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.
The initiative adds a technology and infrastructure component to a broader effort to deepen Canada–France economic and security ties. The two governments are also examining cooperation involving energy and advanced technologies as Canada seeks to diversify international relationships.
The shift has an economic dimension. Canada has substantial energy and critical-mineral resources, while Europe is trying to strengthen supply security and reduce strategic dependencies.
For investors, the next question is whether the political commitment develops into specific procurement, infrastructure or investment programs involving aerospace, satellite systems, energy or critical minerals.
