Lebanon’s financial picture remained fragile Monday as the Beirut Stock Exchange edged lower while the deeper banking story stayed unresolved.
Credit Libanais’ aggregate index fell 0.58% to 1,899.87, with weakness concentrated in construction and real estate, while banking shares were broadly flat.
The Lebanese pound has remained near 89,700 per dollar, supporting short-term stability, but the banking sector is still operating far below normal. Resident lending continues to shrink, and a large share of sector assets remains parked at Banque du Liban.
The biggest unresolved issue remains deposits. Lebanon still lacks a final framework for allocating losses and repaying depositors, even after parliament advanced bank-resolution reforms that the IMF called a major step.
Until that framework is enacted and implemented, the country remains in stabilization mode rather than true financial recovery.
