US 10-Year Near 5% Raises Borrowing-Cost Risks Into Fed Week

US Treasury yield curve / 10-year near 5% borrowing-cost risk into Fed week

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield finished last week at 4.97%, just shy of the watched 5% mark, in a bond selloff that Bloomberg said is raising fresh borrowing-cost risks from Wall Street to Washington ahead of this week’s Federal Reserve meeting.

Bloomberg tied the move to oil-driven inflation fears and fiscal and issuance pressure. Business Insider reported that around midday Friday the 10-year was about 4.95% and had briefly spiked to 4.99% earlier that day. Those prints are Friday intraday color under the 4.97% week-end lock; this note does not claim the yield finished above 5%.

Padhraic Garvey of ING told Business Insider that 5% is watched because the 10-year has rarely broken through that threshold in recent history, with the last sustained move past 5% in 2007 aside from a short 2023 episode. Garvey said a break above 5% would cause stresses and could pressure risk assets, but stressed that the speed of the rise from about 4.5% matters more than the round number.
