Bloomberg’s Saturday feature says diesel, gas, and crack spreads, not just Brent above $100, are the louder alarm for central banks into winter. After Thursday’s ECB rate increase, President Christine Lagarde highlighted refining margins and said rates might have to go higher. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey earlier in the week told parliament that crack spreads are adding to UK price pressure.
Diesel futures in some regions have traded north of $200 a barrel. Europe’s natural gas is at its highest since late 2022 with inventories thin; further buying could push prices back above €100/MWh, about 25% above current levels. U.S. diesel is at a record. Kuwait Petroleum’s Shaikh Khaled Al-Sabah said this week Northern Europe faces a very difficult winter and that this is only the beginning.
September 17 is BOE event risk only, with Bank Rate at 3.75%. Bloomberg markets expect two rate increases by February, while RSM expects a hold then. Path pricing is not the next meeting.
