U.S. stocks opened higher Friday after a hotter-than-expected core consumer price index print, with oil retreat helping cushion risk even as September Federal Reserve hike odds stayed elevated. A Reuters open snapshot put the Dow up 140.4 points, or 0.27%, to 52,204.46, the S&P 500 up 45.1 points, or 0.59%, to 7,636.75, and the Nasdaq Composite up 207.7 points, or 0.80%, to 26,289.414.

A later Associated Press mid-morning stamp as of 11:45 a.m. Eastern Time showed a firmer rebound, with the S&P up about 1.1%, the Dow up 554 points or 1.1%, and the Nasdaq up about 1.3%. Those AP marks are labeled separately from the Reuters open and are not closes.

CNBC, citing CME FedWatch, put September hike odds near 86%, within a roughly 85% to 90% wire band after the core surprise. Brent crude was about 3% lower near $104.4, color that helped risk sentiment. August headline CPI rose 0.4% month over month and 3.4% year over year, with core up 0.3% versus a 0.2% consensus.
