U.S. equity index futures stayed higher but pared overnight gains after a hotter-than-expected core consumer price index print, keeping September Federal Reserve hike odds elevated. A Reuters stamp at 8:34 a.m. Eastern Time, or 7:34 a.m. Central, put Dow E-minis up 347 points, or 0.67%, S&P 500 E-minis up 46 points, or 0.61%, and Nasdaq 100 E-minis up 213 points, or 0.73%.
Those marks remain green versus the pre-print path near 0.5% to 0.6%, though the wire said gains were trimmed after the data. CNBC, citing CME FedWatch, said odds of a September 25-basis-point hike jumped to about 90% from a roughly 70% pre-print band.
The futures rebound that had built overnight into the CPI window held in the first half-hour after the print, even as core month-over-month inflation came in hot versus Street estimates. Traders were still pricing a firm path into the Sep. 15-16 FOMC after the core surprise.
