Big Tech’s $300 Billion AI Guarantee Boom Pushes Hidden Financing Risk Into Focus

The financing behind the artificial-intelligence boom is becoming almost as important as the technology itself.

Major technology and semiconductor companies have provided as much as $300 billion in guarantees connected with AI data centers and chips over the past year. The structures can allow outside financing vehicles to raise debt while technology companies provide varying forms of financial support.

One increasingly important structure is the residual-value guarantee. Instead of directly borrowing all the money required for an AI project, a company can support financing by agreeing to absorb part of a future loss if infrastructure or equipment is ultimately worth less than an agreed amount.

That distinction matters. The debt may sit primarily inside a special-purpose financing vehicle rather than appearing as conventional corporate borrowing by the technology company providing the guarantee.

Reported transactions illustrate the scale. Nvidia has been associated with as much as $105 billion of guarantees tied to an AI data-center development, while Broadcom has provided roughly $29 billion of backing for financing connected with chips destined for Anthropic. Meta has also used guarantees in financing its data-center expansion.

These arrangements do not mean the entire guaranteed amount will become a loss. Guarantees become economically important when the assets or counterparties they support fail to perform as expected.

But the expansion changes the way investors need to evaluate the AI capital cycle.

AI developers require enormous quantities of chips, electricity and data-center capacity. Financing those requirements increasingly extends beyond ordinary corporate capital expenditure and into private credit, special-purpose vehicles, convertible debt and guarantees.

CoreWeave offered another illustration of the financing appetite last week when it launched a $3 billion convertible-debt offering to fund expansion of its AI cloud infrastructure.

The market question is therefore shifting.

Demand for AI computing remains substantial, but investors now need to assess not only revenue growth and capital expenditure but also who ultimately bears the financial risk if projected demand, equipment values or utilization rates fall short.

That makes financing structure a growing part of the AI investment thesis—and a potential transmission channel between the technology boom and global credit markets.
