U.S. stocks held near 1% higher into Friday midday and early afternoon after a hotter-than-expected core consumer price index, as falling oil prices outweighed sticky inflation worry and September Federal Reserve hike odds stayed elevated. A Motley Fool midday stamp as of 11:31 a.m. Eastern Time put the S&P 500 up 1.06% to 7,672, the Nasdaq Composite up 1.31% to 26,423, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.95% to 52,560. Those marks are midday stamps, not closes, and sit firmer than the morning open path.

A Bloomberg Markets Wrap as of 2:08 p.m. New York showed the S&P up about 1%, the Nasdaq 100 up 1.1%, and the Dow up 1.1%. West Texas Intermediate crude was down 2.8% to $99.64 in that wrap, color that helped cushion risk. CNBC, citing CME FedWatch, put September hike odds near 86%, up from about 72% Thursday, within a roughly 85.6% to 86% CME-cited band. August core CPI rose 0.3% month over month versus a 0.2% consensus.
