Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s larger long-bond repurchase did not cool the Treasury selloff on Wednesday. CNBC said the department will buy back up to $6 billion of 10- to 20-year debt on Thursday, Sep. 10, in a short window ending about 2 p.m. Eastern, roughly triple a normal long-end operation. Yields rose after the announce. NBC, updated near 4:15 p.m. Eastern, said the 10-year surged as high as about 4.85%, the highest since November 2023, and that 20- and 30-year yields tagged near 5.3%.
Afternoon Tradeweb tape showed the 10-year near 4.845% after an intraday high around 4.857%; Reuters put the note near 4.841%, up about 3.7 basis points. High is not last. NBC said yields eased slightly by 4 p.m. Eastern but stayed elevated as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed lower. The story is market reaction to the schedule, not a repeat of the buyback announcement alone. No fiscal-consolidation package size was disclosed.
