Bessent Calls U.S. Inflation an Energy Supply Shock as Oil Nears $110

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that the administration views the latest inflation pressure primarily as an energy supply shock, placing oil and gasoline prices at the center of the near-term U.S. economic outlook.

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Bessent said the administration would “own the economy” while arguing that the Iran conflict has distorted the inflation picture.

September consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, while gasoline prices have climbed sharply since the conflict began.

Bessent said energy markets should become better supplied once the conflict eases and argued that underlying conditions remain stronger than the headline inflation rate suggests.

He cited roughly one million private-sector jobs created this year and record U.S. household net worth. Those figures represent the administration’s characterization of current economic conditions rather than an independent assessment of the entire economy.

The comments matter because energy has become a critical variable for both consumers and monetary policy.

Brent crude finished Friday near $110 a barrel, while elevated fuel costs are feeding through transportation, imported goods and broader inflation expectations.

For markets, the issue is whether energy prices retreat quickly enough to prevent another round of inflation transmission into transportation, goods and services.

If oil remains elevated, the Federal Reserve could face persistent inflation pressure despite softer conditions elsewhere.

If supply improves materially, headline inflation could receive meaningful relief without requiring the same degree of demand destruction from monetary policy.
