Global AI Chip Selloff Deepens as Investors Question Spending and China Competition

A global selloff in artificial-intelligence semiconductor stocks deepened Tuesday, putting one of the market’s most powerful investment themes under renewed pressure as investors reassessed competition, financing conditions and the enormous spending required to expand AI infrastructure.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell about 1.5%, extending its decline to a fifth consecutive session and taking the benchmark to roughly a four-week low. The weakness followed heavier selling across Asian technology markets, including a sharp decline in South Korean semiconductor shares.

One immediate catalyst was concern surrounding advances by Chinese memory producer CXMT. Reports of progress in Chinese memory technology increased fears that domestic suppliers could challenge established global manufacturers more quickly than investors had expected.

But the pressure extends beyond China.

Investors are increasingly scrutinizing whether the extraordinary capital committed to AI data centers, processors and supporting infrastructure will generate returns quickly enough to justify current valuations and financing requirements.

The change is visible in capital markets. Nvidia-backed Firmus has shelved a planned $5 billion initial public offering, while debt investors have become more selective toward technology financing as long-term interest rates remain elevated.

The shift does not mean AI infrastructure demand has disappeared. Semiconductor companies continue to report enormous demand for advanced processors, memory and networking equipment.

Instead, the market is beginning to distinguish between growth in AI spending and the eventual economic return on that spending.

That distinction matters because semiconductor valuations have increasingly depended on expectations that hyperscaler capital expenditure will remain exceptionally high for years.

For investors, the next test is whether the current decline remains a valuation correction or develops into a broader reassessment of the AI capital cycle. Earnings guidance, hyperscaler spending plans, memory pricing and financing conditions will provide the next evidence.
