Kalshi Launches Perpetual U.S. Stock Index Contract in Push Beyond Prediction Markets

Prediction-market operator Kalshi has launched a perpetual futures contract tied to a broad U.S. stock index, expanding into a derivatives structure that has grown rapidly in cryptocurrency markets.

The contract tracks Kalshi’s US 500 index, which represents 500 of the largest U.S. companies.

Unlike conventional futures contracts, perpetual futures do not have a fixed expiration date.

That structure allows traders to maintain exposure without periodically rolling positions from an expiring contract into a new one, although mechanisms are required to keep the contract’s price aligned with its underlying reference market.

Perpetual futures became particularly popular in cryptocurrency trading and are now attracting greater interest beyond digital assets.

Kalshi’s move is notable because the company built its business primarily around event contracts and prediction markets, where traders take positions on the outcomes of economic, political and other events.

Moving into stock-index exposure places the company closer to markets traditionally dominated by established futures and derivatives exchanges.

The expansion also comes as prediction markets attempt to convert rapid user growth into broader financial platforms rather than remaining specialized venues for event-based trading.

For investors and the exchange industry, the important question is whether perpetual contracts can gain meaningful adoption in regulated U.S. financial markets.

If they do, traditional exchange operators could face a new source of competition from platforms that began outside conventional securities and futures trading.
