Meta Platforms is making a direct push into enterprise artificial intelligence, hiring MongoDB chief executive Chirantan “CJ” Desai to lead a new organization designed to sell Meta’s AI technology to corporate customers.
Desai will become Meta’s chief enterprise platform officer and report directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Meta said its new Meta Enterprise Platform will bring AI models, agents and tools to businesses, including Muse, Meta Business Agent and coding products.
The announcement produced an immediate market consequence for MongoDB. Its shares dropped sharply after Desai’s departure was disclosed, falling about 18% during morning trading after even steeper indications before the opening bell.
Desai had led MongoDB for less than a year.
MongoDB responded by bringing back Dev Ittycheria as interim president and CEO while beginning a search for a permanent replacement. Ittycheria previously led the database-software company for more than a decade.
Importantly for investors, MongoDB reaffirmed its existing third-quarter and full-year fiscal 2027 guidance, separating the leadership shock from an immediate deterioration in the company’s disclosed financial outlook.
For Meta, the recruitment signals a broader commercial ambition for its recent AI investments. Muse launched earlier in September as a consumer-facing AI agent capable of carrying out tasks across applications. Meta is now attempting to extend that technology into corporate environments where businesses are spending heavily on AI agents, software development, automation and data infrastructure.
That places Meta more directly into competition for enterprise AI spending rather than relying primarily on consumer products and advertising to monetize its artificial-intelligence investment.
The strategy is not yet fully defined commercially. Details such as enterprise pricing, contractual terms and the way Meta’s different AI products will be packaged remain important unanswered questions.
For MongoDB, attention now turns to its leadership transition and its September 29 investor event. For Meta, investors will watch for evidence that its AI technology can become a meaningful enterprise revenue stream alongside the company’s enormous consumer platforms.
