China Weighs Allowing Alibaba and ByteDance to Buy Nvidia’s New AI Chips

China is considering allowing some of its largest technology companies, including Alibaba and ByteDance, to purchase a new Nvidia processor, potentially opening a limited channel for high-performance U.S. computing hardware into the Chinese market.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently asked companies including Alibaba and ByteDance to report their plans for purchasing Nvidia’s RTX PRO 5500 chips, The Information reported Sunday, citing two people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, officials told some Chinese companies that Beijing intends to approve purchases of the processors. Industry executives expect the RTX PRO 5500 to fall outside existing U.S. export restrictions. Reuters said it could not independently verify the report.

That qualification is important. Neither Beijing nor the companies involved had publicly confirmed approvals when Reuters reported the development.

Nvidia said U.S. companies continue to face restrictions arising from both U.S. export controls and Chinese limits on American imports. Alibaba and ByteDance did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment, and Reuters was unable to immediately reach the Chinese government.

The potential opening matters because access to advanced processors remains one of the central constraints in the U.S.-China artificial-intelligence competition.

China has simultaneously pushed domestic companies toward locally produced semiconductors while Chinese AI developers continue to require increasingly large amounts of computing power for model training and inference.

Any approval for Nvidia hardware would therefore represent a pragmatic exception rather than evidence that the broader technology dispute has ended.

For Nvidia, even a limited reopening could preserve some commercial access to Chinese demand. For Alibaba and ByteDance, additional processor options could expand available computing capacity while domestic chip production continues to scale.

The next questions are whether Beijing formally authorizes the purchases, how many chips could be imported and whether Washington determines that the RTX PRO 5500 falls within existing export-control boundaries.
