Tencent Holdings has raised approximately $5.7 billion through U.S. dollar and offshore-yuan bonds, attracting more than $23 billion in investor orders despite growing market concern about the enormous amounts of capital being committed to artificial intelligence.
The Chinese technology group sold $1.3 billion of 10-year dollar bonds and $500 million of 20-year notes.
Tencent simultaneously raised 26 billion yuan through offshore renminbi bonds, including 20 billion yuan of 10-year securities and 6 billion yuan of 30-year debt.
Combined demand exceeded four times the final offering size.
The strong order book is notable because technology companies globally are encountering greater investor scrutiny over the cost of financing AI infrastructure.
Higher interest rates and volatility across semiconductor and technology stocks have raised questions about whether the returns generated by AI investments will justify the enormous capital requirements.
Tencent nevertheless continues to increase spending on artificial-intelligence infrastructure and products.
Its capital expenditure more than doubled during the first half of 2026 to approximately 96.3 billion yuan as the company expanded computing and data infrastructure.
The company said proceeds from the latest bond offering will be used for general corporate purposes.
Tencent’s ability to raise long-duration financing demonstrates that debt markets remain accessible to large technology companies with substantial cash flow even as investors become more selective about AI-related borrowing.
The transaction also provides an important market signal.
Investor skepticism about AI spending has increased, but the Tencent offering suggests that concern has not translated into a broad withdrawal of capital from financially strong technology companies.
For investors, the next question is whether Tencent and other major technology groups can convert rapidly rising infrastructure spending into sufficient revenue and earnings growth to justify both the investment and additional borrowing.
