China’s Industrial Rise Is Squeezing European Manufacturers, ECB Finds

China’s expansion into higher-value manufacturing is putting increasing competitive pressure on European industry, with German producers among the most exposed, according to European Central Bank analysis.

The European Union has been losing global goods-export share particularly in sectors and markets where Chinese manufacturers have expanded, including machinery and transport equipment.

Germany faces significant exposure because its export economy overlaps heavily with sectors in which Chinese companies have become increasingly competitive.

The pressure reflects an important shift in the structure of Chinese exports. Competition is no longer concentrated primarily in lower-value consumer manufacturing. Chinese companies have expanded into advanced manufacturing, including automotive products, electronics, machinery and intermediate industrial goods.

That creates competing effects for Europe.

Lower-cost Chinese intermediate products can reduce expenses for European manufacturers that use them in their own production. At the same time, stronger Chinese competitors can displace European-made products both inside Europe and in international export markets.

European producers have been losing market share in areas where Chinese competition has intensified, particularly since 2020. China is also increasingly capable of supplying products domestically that previously generated demand for European imports.

The implications extend beyond trade balances.

Manufacturing competitiveness affects industrial investment, employment, corporate profitability and the longer-term growth prospects of export-oriented European economies. Cheaper imported goods can simultaneously reduce production costs and contribute to lower inflation.

Germany’s large industrial base makes developments in machinery, automobiles and related supply chains particularly important.

European manufacturers will increasingly have to compete on productivity, technology, energy costs and investment as Chinese companies move further into industries that historically formed the core of Europe’s export economy.

The next question for markets is whether European manufacturers can protect margins and global market share while making the investments necessary to remain competitive in increasingly contested industrial sectors.
