China Holds Lending Benchmarks Steady for 16th Straight Month

China kept its benchmark lending rates unchanged Sunday for a 16th consecutive month, maintaining a cautious monetary stance as policymakers contend with weak credit demand and tighter conditions abroad.

The one-year loan prime rate remained at 3.00%, while the five-year LPR stayed at 3.50%. The decision was widely expected by economists.

The one-year rate influences most new and outstanding loans, while the five-year benchmark is an important reference for mortgages. Holding both steady signals that Beijing is not turning immediately to broad rate reductions despite continuing pressure in parts of the domestic economy.

The decision comes against a less accommodating international backdrop. Higher U.S. interest rates have widened the yield differential between U.S. and Chinese government debt, complicating the case for aggressive Chinese easing.

Domestic constraints matter as well. Weakness in property and local-government borrowing has reduced credit demand, while banks face pressure on lending margins.

For markets, the question is increasingly whether Beijing relies on targeted support rather than another broad reduction in benchmark lending rates.

Investors will watch upcoming activity, property and credit data for evidence that the current policy setting is sufficient to stabilize domestic demand.
