U.S. stocks traded lower at midday Thursday as Treasury yields climbed and traders raised Federal Reserve hike odds into Friday’s consumer price index. At 12:11 p.m. ET, Thomson Reuters reported the Dow at 52,030.42, down 0.67%; the S&P 500 at 7,591.88, down 0.58%; and the Nasdaq at 26,094.32, down 0.61%. Those are mid-session prints, not closing levels.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury cash yield was at 4.9198%, its highest since 2023, and the two-year at 4.5287%, its highest since 2024, Reuters said. Traders saw about a 70% chance of a September Fed hike according to CME FedWatch as cited by Reuters and CNBC. Later mid-session Yahoo Finance prints around 2:08 p.m. CT were softer, with the Dow near 51,996, down about 0.73%; they remain mid-session, not closes.
Hotter producer prices and oil above $100 weighed on equities as session context alongside the jump in hike odds. Friday’s CPI is the next gate into the Sep. 15-16 FOMC.
