Fed Holds Rates Steady After September Hike as Markets Turn to Next Policy Signal

The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady Wednesday, pausing after its September increase as policymakers weigh persistent inflation against the effects of already restrictive borrowing costs.

The decision leaves the federal-funds target range unchanged at 3.75% to 4.00%. The Federal Open Market Committee approved the decision by a 10-2 vote. Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, preferring another quarter-point increase. (Federal Reserve)

The Fed upgraded its assessment of economic activity, describing growth as strong while noting resilient domestic spending, robust capital investment and job gains that have kept pace with the workforce.

Inflation remains the central constraint. Policymakers said price pressures remain elevated and indicated that additional information will determine the appropriate policy stance.

The pause follows a 25-basis-point increase in September, the Fed’s first rate increase in more than three years.

Financial markets had broadly expected Wednesday’s hold, shifting attention toward December. Following the decision, futures markets priced an approximately 87% probability of a quarter-point increase at the Fed’s next meeting, up from roughly 78% a day earlier. (Reuters)

The immediate market reaction was relatively contained. Treasury yields remained higher, while major U.S. equity indexes traded near flat levels after the announcement. (MarketScreener)

The next phase of the policy debate will depend heavily on inflation, employment and economic-growth data before the final Fed meeting of the year.

For investors, the central question is whether Wednesday’s pause represents a slower tightening cadence or the beginning of a longer hold.

Persistent inflation would strengthen the case for another increase, while evidence that price pressures are cooling would give policymakers greater room to extend the pause.
