Otter.ai has secured $320 million in growth financing from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund as the artificial-intelligence meeting platform pushes deeper into enterprise software.
Unlike a conventional venture-capital round, the financing does not involve issuing new equity.
The capital is repayable with interest as Otter’s sales and marketing investments generate revenue, allowing the company to finance expansion without immediately diluting existing shareholders.
Otter plans to use the money to expand its enterprise business, international presence, sales operation and product development.
The company says more than 40 million people have used its service, while enterprise has emerged as its fastest-growing segment. Management aims to at least double enterprise revenue next year.
Otter also says users from approximately 86% of Fortune 500 companies already use its products, although much of that adoption has occurred organically rather than through company-wide paid contracts.
That distinction is central to the company’s strategy.
Otter now needs to convert widespread individual usage inside large organizations into larger enterprise subscriptions.
The financing structure is also notable at a time when private AI companies are consuming increasingly large amounts of capital.
Rather than completing another conventional equity round, Otter is effectively financing customer acquisition against expected future business.
The company eventually intends to pursue an initial public offering, but expanding enterprise revenue remains the more immediate objective.
For investors watching private AI markets, the next test is whether Otter can turn its large user base into recurring enterprise revenue quickly enough to support the financing costs attached to its expansion.
