Anthropic said Sunday it plans to commit 5% of its shares to a newly created public-benefit fund, introducing an unusual ownership structure as the artificial-intelligence developer continues expanding rapidly.
The commitment remains subject to stockholder approval.
Anthropic said the stake could grow as the company’s valuation increases, potentially giving the fund an increasingly valuable position if the AI developer continues appreciating.
The move is significant because ownership structures at leading AI companies are becoming increasingly important as their valuations, computing requirements and influence grow.
The structure could create a mechanism through which some of the financial value generated by Anthropic is directed toward broader public-benefit objectives rather than remaining entirely with conventional shareholders.
The announcement comes during a period of rapid expansion for Anthropic.
The company recently signed its first Canadian data-center agreement as part of a Nova Scotia development that could involve more than C$10 billion of investment.
Anthropic has also been associated with potential public-market plans as the company expands its infrastructure footprint and competes with other major AI developers.
Investors should now watch the terms of the fund, stockholder approval and whether the 5% commitment changes alongside Anthropic’s valuation.
