Japanese automation group Omron has agreed to acquire U.S. industrial-computer maker OnLogic and its parent company Interlogic for $675 million, expanding its push into artificial intelligence for manufacturing and industrial automation.

OnLogic develops rugged and configurable industrial computers designed for factories and other demanding environments.

The acquisition gives Omron a larger presence in industrial computing as manufacturers increase investment in automation and artificial-intelligence systems capable of interacting directly with machinery.

Omron intends to combine OnLogic’s industrial computing systems with its own high-precision control technology.

The objective is to strengthen what the industry increasingly describes as physical AI — systems that allow artificial intelligence to interact directly with machinery, robots and industrial processes rather than operating solely as software.

Physical AI is emerging as another front in the broader artificial-intelligence investment cycle.

AI models increasingly require specialized hardware at the edge of industrial networks, where computing systems must process sensor data and make decisions close to machines rather than sending every task to centralized cloud infrastructure.

For Omron, the acquisition also expands its exposure to the United States and other Western industrial markets.

The transaction illustrates how the AI investment cycle is moving beyond semiconductors, cloud computing and data centers into factories, robotics and industrial-control systems.

That shift could create a new layer of demand for computing hardware designed specifically for harsh manufacturing environments.

For investors, the key question will be whether Omron can translate the acquisition into higher-value automation systems and capture a larger share of manufacturing investment tied to robotics and AI.
