Elon Musk says SpaceX will price Starlink aggressively in India as the satellite-internet provider prepares to challenge Reliance Jio in one of the world’s largest telecommunications markets.
The move comes just days before Jio Platforms’ parent launches what is expected to be India’s largest-ever initial public offering, targeting a valuation of approximately $106 billion.
Musk said Starlink would need affordable pricing to compete in India, where mobile-data costs are among the lowest in the world. He did not disclose specific subscription prices.
The competitive stakes extend beyond India’s broadband market.
Reliance Jio transformed Indian telecommunications through inexpensive mobile data and has built a dominant position in the country. Starlink would enter with a fundamentally different satellite-based network while SpaceX is also preparing to expand further into mobile communications, including plans beginning in the United States.
Both Starlink and Jio’s satellite venture are awaiting final security clearance before launching services in India.
The situation has also become increasingly contentious. Musk has accused the Indian government of delaying Starlink’s entry to protect Jio, an allegation the government denies. Indian authorities say the satellite operators seeking entry remain subject to the same security-clearance process.
For investors, the timing is significant because the competitive confrontation is intensifying immediately before Jio’s landmark public offering.
A successful Starlink launch could introduce a powerful new competitor into India’s communications market while testing whether satellite broadband can compete economically in a country accustomed to exceptionally inexpensive terrestrial mobile data.
The next developments to watch are India’s final security approvals, Starlink’s actual pricing structure and investor demand for Jio’s IPO.
