Nvidia Wins Modal CPU Business as Vera Pushes Into Intel and AMD Territory

Nvidia has secured an important new customer for its Vera central processor as the AI-chip leader expands beyond GPUs into a market long dominated by Intel and AMD.

AI cloud provider Modal said it plans to begin using Vera CPUs to host autonomous AI agents.

Until now, Modal has relied exclusively on Intel and AMD processors for those workloads.

The company said early testing showed Vera could complete roughly twice as much agent work as the Intel and AMD processors Modal currently uses. The comparison involved existing rival products rather than upcoming processor generations, an important distinction as competitors continue developing new hardware.

Modal is becoming a significant infrastructure customer.

The company recently raised $750 million in a financing round led by Accel at a $15.75 billion valuation and says it is on track to record approximately $1 billion in sales over the next year.

Modal does not plan to abandon Intel or AMD.

Instead, it intends to operate a mixed processor fleet and direct workloads toward whichever hardware performs best.

That makes the deployment particularly significant for Nvidia.

The company built its AI dominance primarily around GPUs and its CUDA software ecosystem. Vera represents an attempt to capture a larger share of the computing architecture surrounding AI workloads by competing directly in CPUs.

Modal provides an early commercial test of whether Nvidia can translate its dominance in AI accelerators into a durable position in the central-processor market.

For investors, the next development to watch is whether additional AI infrastructure companies begin shifting CPU workloads toward Nvidia or continue maintaining diversified fleets across Nvidia, Intel and AMD.
